Preparation

Before a tile goes on, the wall or floor is checked against tolerance.

Where it falls outside, it is brought back with levelling compounds, walls and floors alike. Under mosaic this happens most often after waterproofing: joint and corner tape is thick enough to show through, and the smaller the tile, the more every ridge shows.

Rendered wall checked for flatness under raking torchlight before mosaic tiling

Wall rendered for mosaic and checked under raking light. At this angle even a 0.5 mm ridge throws a clear shadow; here the light carries across the whole wall with no dark patches, so the surface is within tolerance.

Bathrooms

Most of this tiling is part of complete bathrooms. See the finished rooms.
