How wedi boards actually work, and what that means when you specify one
What the board actually is, where the thickness rules come from, why the joints decide the outcome, and how the other systems compare. From wedi's own documentation, and from installing it.

The board came from another industry
XPS was never invented for bathrooms. Dow developed extruded polystyrene in 1941 as insulation and buoyancy material, and for the next four decades that is all it was: a foam that kept buildings warm and rafts afloat. It already had the two properties that would later matter — closed cells that take no water, and a rigid body that stays flat — but nobody was tiling onto it.
In 1983, in Emsdetten, master tiler Helmut Wedi faced that foam on both sides with glass-fibre mesh and polymer cement, and insulation became a substrate. The timing did the rest. Through the 1990s and 2000s three things happened at once. Showers went level-access and walk-in, pushed by an ageing population and accessible-design rules. The wellness boom moved bathrooms up the budget. And the trade that could form falls in sand and cement on site quietly disappeared. Insurers and specifiers changed with them: they wanted a certificate on file, not a craftsman's word. A board that arrived waterproof, with the falls already formed, answered all of this at once.
Once the patents ran out and the standards caught up, comparable boards followed: JACKOBOARD, Schlüter, Marmox, the cement-based systems. The foam core is now effectively the same everywhere; what still differs is the system around it — the joints, the sealants, the tested combinations. It is the same move plasterboard made a century earlier, when it took plastering off the wall and into the factory. And it is the same logic that is now taking plasterboard itself out of the wet room.
Britain ran the same curve last, and through regulation rather than taste. The British bathroom held onto the bathtub and the plasterboard long after the continent had moved on; the wet room arrived as an import in the 2000s. Part M pushed level access into mainstream design, adaptation grants made it something councils would pay for, and the 2018 revision of BS 5385-1 recommended waterproofing every substrate in a wet area while advising against moisture-sensitive boards behind the tiles. The backer board stopped being a preference and became the shortest route to a specification that passes.
Not waterproof plasterboard. A different object.
A wedi board is a core of extruded polystyrene (XPS), faced on both sides with glass-fibre mesh and a polymer-modified cement coating. The cement face is there for adhesion: it is the surface that tile adhesive and plaster bond to.
The waterproofing is the core itself. Closed-cell XPS is waterproof through its full thickness. wedi rates the board 100% waterproof from a 3 mm core, and its own documentation confirms that a board with a damaged cement face is still waterproof. A liquid membrane behaves the opposite way: nick it with a trowel notch or a tile corner during fixing and the breach is under the tile before anyone sees it. There is no membrane to puncture, because there is no membrane.
One factory-made element replaces both the substrate and the tanking layer. The standard format is 2,500 x 600 mm, in thicknesses from 4 to 100 mm. Boards weigh a fraction of plasterboard or cement board, and the foam core insulates as well as it waterproofs.
Where traditional build-ups fail
The default UK shower build-up, moisture-resistant plasterboard plus a brushed-on tanking membrane, depends entirely on site workmanship: membrane thickness, coverage, cure time, and what the next trade does to it. Gypsum tolerates a leak badly once water finds a path.
With a board system, the field of the wall is waterproof before it arrives on site. Quality control collapses to a short list you can actually inspect: joints, fixing points, penetrations. That list is what site supervision should be looking at, not the flat areas.
The paperwork holds up too. wedi boards carry BBA certification and a European Technical Assessment, and the test certificates name the specific adhesives the system was tested with — so when building control or an insurer asks what is behind the tiles, there is a document to hand over, not an explanation. One caveat: it is a foam-core material, rated Euroclass E for fire. Where reaction-to-fire of the lining is a controlling requirement, resolve it with wedi’s technical team at design stage, not on site.
Thickness is structural, not preferential
Each thickness exists for a specific fixing situation. From wedi's application guidelines:

Self-supporting work built to wedi's specific guidance: partitions, bath panels, pipe boxings, benches, niches.
If a drawing shows 12.5 mm board on 600 mm centres, or 12.5 mm dabbed onto brickwork, it contradicts the manufacturer's guidelines and the certification that comes with them.
The substrate rules that reach the drawing
Most substrate preparation is contractor territory, but a few of wedi's limits are design decisions.
Moisture. Residual moisture limits before boarding: 2.0% for cement screed and 0.5% for calcium sulphate on floors, 1.0% for gypsum plaster on walls. On a new-build programme this is a sequencing constraint, not a site detail.
Timber floors. The structure must deflect no more than span/300, over a minimum deck of 16 mm sheet material or 21 mm floorboards. Boards are then bonded and screwed at 5 fixings per square metre.
Underfloor heating. wedi advises against boarding directly over a heated screed: the board is an insulator, and it will sit between the heat source and the room. With electric heating mats above the board, or on any floor area over 20 square metres, the whole surface is reinforced with mesh, not just the joints.
All perimeter, corner and wall-to-floor junctions are formed as movement joints, and remain movement joints through the tiling. Commercial wet areas and pools follow separate approvals: that is a direct conversation with wedi, not this guide.
The joints are the system
Because the board field is factory-waterproof, everything that can fail is a line or a point: board-to-board joints, fixing screws, pipe penetrations, and junctions to other materials.
wedi's method: joints are reinforced with tape bedded in tile adhesive, and in wet areas they are sealed on top of that — either with wedi 610 adhesive sealant or with sealing tape. Every screw-and-washer point and every penetration is sealed. Junctions to non-wedi materials, screed or plasterboard, take sealing tape.
Two consequences for a specification. First, the sealant is not a preference item: the test certificates cover named combinations of board, sealant and adhesive, so a generic silicone or another brand's tape steps outside the certification. Second, this is where inspection time belongs on site.
Wall-hung loads go in the wall, not the board
The board carries tile, not sanitaryware. Basins, wall-hung WCs, grab rails and folding seats need support in the structure behind: noggins, plywood pattresses or proprietary installation frames, decided at design stage, because after tiling it is too late. In those areas the board itself has to be bonded full-surface — spot bonding and free-standing construction are ruled out wherever fixings land. Lightweight accessories can use wedi's cavity fixings.
Two load rules from the guidelines that surprise people: tiles must be at least 100 x 100 mm and 7 mm thick for pressure points to transfer load properly, and floors take no concentrated rolling loads.
The system beyond flat board
The same XPS construction extends into pre-formed elements — and this is the part that changes what a designer can draw.
Fundo shower elements are floor-level shower bases with the falls already formed and the drain integrated, point or linear, sealed into the surrounding board field. This is the reliable route to a flush threshold, and the Ligno versions recess into timber floors.
Niches, benches, bath panels, pipe boxings and tileable washbasins arrive as prefabricated waterproof volumes rather than site-built carcasses.
Steam is a separate case. The standard board resists vapour but is not a vapour barrier. For steam rooms and permanently humid spaces, wedi makes a Vapor board with a barrier laminated to one face. That is a different product to specify, not an installation adjustment.

Similar boards, same logic
JACKOBOARD is the closest equivalent: an XPS core with a cement coating on both faces, a comparable thickness range and comparable applications. It is frequently the commercial alternative in the UK.
Schlüter KERDI-BOARD uses the same XPS core with a cement-free facing, and belongs to Schlüter's own sealing ecosystem of tapes and membranes.
Cement-based backer boards are dimensionally stable and robust, but not inherently waterproof: they still need a membrane, and they weigh several times more.
The logic in this guide — thickness by fixing situation, joints as the critical path, loads into the structure — transfers across all of them. The certificates and sealing materials do not: each system is certified as a system, and components are not interchangeable between brands.
Common questions, straight answers
Can I tile straight onto a wedi board?
Yes. Once the joints and fixing points are sealed and cured, the cement face takes tile adhesive directly, with no priming. The guideline minimum for tiles under point loads is 100 x 100 mm and 7 mm thick.
Does it still need tanking?
Not across the face: the board itself is the waterproof layer, so liquid membranes over the field are redundant. What is mandatory is the joint work — tape bedded in tile adhesive to reinforce every joint, sealed on top in wet areas with wedi 610 or sealing tape, plus every screw point, every penetration, and every junction to a non-wedi material. The waterproofing lives at the lines and points, not the surface.
Can it go over underfloor heating?
Not directly over a heated screed: the board is an insulator and would sit between the heat and the room. Electric heating mats go above the board instead, and any floor with mats, or larger than 20 square metres, is reinforced with mesh across the whole surface, not just the joints.
Can I fix boards straight to floor joists?
No — boards do not span open joists. They need a continuous rigid deck first, at least 16 mm sheet material or 21 mm floorboards, deflecting no more than span/300. The boards are then bonded and screwed to that deck at five fixings per square metre.
Can I hang a basin or a wall-hung WC on it?
Not on the board alone: the foam core does not hold cantilevered loads. Basins, wall-hung WCs, grab rails and seats anchor into the structure behind, noggins, plywood pattresses or a proprietary frame, positioned before boarding. Lightweight accessories can use wedi's cavity fixings.
Does it comply with BS 5385-1?
BS 5385-1:2018 is a code of practice for tiling, not a product standard, so no board complies by itself. What the 2018 revision asks for — a waterproofed substrate in every wet area, and no unprotected moisture-sensitive board behind the tiles — is what a wedi build-up delivers by construction. For UK specification the board also carries BBA certification.
Can I mix wedi boards with another brand's tape, sealant or adhesive?
Physically yes, contractually no. The test certificates and the system warranty cover named combinations of board, sealant and adhesive; substitute a generic silicone or another brand's tape and the build-up is no longer the certified system. If a failure is ever argued over, that substitution is where the argument starts.
How do you achieve a level-access shower with it?
With a Fundo element rather than a site-formed screed: the falls are factory-formed, the drain — point or linear — is integrated, and the tray seals into the surrounding board field. On timber floors the Ligno versions are recessed into the structure so the finished surface runs flush.
Are all backer board brands basically the same?
The cores are close to identical: extruded polystyrene is a commodity, and an XPS core from wedi, JACKOBOARD or Marmox behaves much the same way. What varies is everything around it. The facing dictates which adhesives will bond. The system — tapes, sealants, tested combinations — is where the warranty lives. And the certification each brand holds covers the assembled build-up, not the sheet. The material is interchangeable, the systems are not. Pick a system and stay inside it.
