Steam rooms
A steam room needs a vapour barrier, not waterproofing alone: wedi Vapor board, or a bonded sheet membrane over XPS board, with epoxy grout throughout.

Steam room on wedi Vapor board: olive glass mosaic, a cylindrical mosaic basin and 600 ร 1200 mm travertine-effect porcelain underfoot.

Hammam in iridescent glass mosaic on XPS board with a bonded sheet membrane. The arched panel arrived pre-assembled; the mosaic around it was cut on site.
Preparation
Before a tile goes on, every board joint is taped and every washer sealed.
One factory-made board replaces both the substrate and the tanking layer. In a wet area, board joints take sealing tape, corners take wedi internal and external corner pieces, and every washer is sealed with wedi 610. Plywood for basins and frames for wall-hung WCs go in first, with the board laid over them.

Shower area lined in wedi board: washers sealed with wedi 610, sealing tape on the board joints, internal corners fitted.
